Alpha Steam charges 49 dollars per area for a standard clean and 59 dollars per area for a deep clean, with a 149 dollar minimum, so a common three-bedroom job lands at 343 dollars. The reason quotes feel unpredictable is that companies price on three different units and rarely tell you which one they are using.
Here is how to read any carpet cleaning quote, and what actually moves the number.
The three ways carpet cleaning gets priced
Per room. The most common advertised model and the easiest to misread. The price sounds low because the definition of a room is doing the heavy lifting. Some companies cap a room at 200 square feet and count anything larger as two, and stairs, hallways, and closets are usually separate. A four room special can quietly become a seven room invoice.
Per square foot. Precise and fair, and used more often for large or open floor plans. The catch is that you cannot verify the estimate without measurements, so you are agreeing to a number you have no way to check from your kitchen table.
Per area. What we use. An area is a defined unit with a published rule, so you can count your own home and do the math before anyone arrives. In our system, a bedroom, bathroom, hallway, office, kitchen, mudroom, walk-in closet, stair landing, or one flight of stairs is one area. A living room or family room is two. A large open-concept living space is three.
None of these three models is dishonest by itself. The problem is comparing a per room quote from one company against a per square foot quote from another and treating the smaller number as the better deal.
What Alpha Steam actually charges
Everything below is posted on our pricing page, and it is the same whether you book online or call.
- Standard clean, 49 dollars per area. Hot water extraction for everyday dirt, traffic lanes, and general freshening.
- Deep clean, 59 dollars per area. More pre-treatment and a more thorough extraction for carpet that is heavily soiled, has pets, or has gone a long time between cleanings.
- Minimum, 149 dollars per job.
A worked example, which is the fastest way to understand the system. Three bedrooms are three areas. A living room is two. A hallway is one. One flight of stairs is one. That is seven areas.
- Standard: 7 areas at 49 dollars is 343 dollars.
- Deep: 7 areas at 59 dollars is 413 dollars.
Booking takes a flat 100 dollar deposit. The balance is invoiced when the work is finished. Estimates are shown before state and local tax, and your final invoice includes it.
The add-ons, and which ones are worth it
Add-ons are priced per area so you only apply them where they are needed, not across the whole house.
- Pet odor treatment, 49.99 per area. Worth it where urine has reached the pad, which is a different problem than a surface stain. That distinction is the whole subject of getting pet stains and odor out of carpet.
- Stain treatment, 49.99 per area. For specific set-in spots, not general soil.
- Carpet protector, 29.99 per area. Most useful on new or newly cleaned carpet in traffic lanes and under a dining table.
- Natural fiber upgrade, 29.99 per area. Wool and other natural fibers need different chemistry and a gentler process.
- Professional furniture moving, 19.99 per area. Optional. Moving small items yourself is one of the easiest ways to keep a total down, and it is on our preparation checklist.
- Edge and baseboard detail, 9.99 per area. The dark lines along the walls are filtration soil, not dirt you missed.
What moves your number up or down
Four variables explain nearly every difference between two homes of the same size.
- How long it has been. Carpet cleaned every 12 months usually needs a standard clean. Carpet that has gone three years is a deep clean, because the pre-treatment and dwell time genuinely take longer.
- Pets. Not the hair, the accidents. Surface cleaning does not solve odor that has soaked into the pad.
- Fiber and construction. Wool, natural fibers, and delicate rugs need different handling, which is why area rugs get looked at individually rather than dropped into the per area count.
- Access and layout. Stairs are slow, detailed work. Open-concept great rooms cover more square footage than the room count suggests. Both are why our area rule counts them the way it does.
How to compare two quotes honestly
Ask each company the same four questions, and compare the answers rather than the headline price.
- What counts as a room or an area, exactly?
- Is pre-treatment included, or is it an add-on?
- What is the realistic finished total for my home, including everything you would recommend?
- What method are you using, and how long will my carpet stay wet?

Should I be suspicious of a very low advertised price per room?
Be careful with it. A price far below the local market usually means the advertised service is a light surface pass and that pre-treatment, spot work, or extraction itself is quoted as an add-on once the technician is in your home. The Federal Trade Commission's guidance on bait advertising describes the underlying pattern: an offer that is not made in good faith to sell as advertised, used to sell something else. Ask what the advertised price includes and what the realistic finished total is before you book.
